Why we built Coursebox AI: A Founder's Letter

Our founder's letter on why Coursebox exists, what we believe, and the future we are building.

why we built coursebox ai

Building online training has traditionally taken weeks, and often months. It pulls in learning designers, subject-matter experts, reviewers, video editors, graphic designers and assessors. By the time the course is finished, the world it described has already moved on. Technology shifts, the science updates, the company itself changes and the content starts to age almost as soon as it goes live. We built Coursebox to change all of that.

By the numbers

More than 300,000 courses generated, more than 150,000 training providers, learners in 180 countries and content created in dozens of languages.

Why does Coursebox exist?

coursebox 2.0

Coursebox exists because creating and managing high-quality training has been slow, expensive, and heavy on admin, which keeps the average course quality low. We make the whole process simple with agentic AI, so a trainer can produce an engaging, personalised course in minutes and spend their time on the stuff that moves the needle.

Coursebox is an all-in-one agentic AI platform for creating and managing training simply and efficiently. You start by telling Coursebox what you want to make. You describe who the learner is, how long the course should be, and the kind of content you have in mind. From there, Coursebox generates engaging, interactive courses with visuals, video, and scenario-based learning that match what you asked for, and personalises them to the learner to lift engagement. An AI tutor trained on the whole course can chat back and forth with each learner. Learners can switch into voice mode and listen to a course like a podcast, then complete their assessments by speaking rather than typing.

The same simplicity carries through after the first draft. You can ask Coursebox in chat to edit a course or add content, and it generates the change for you. You can white-label the entire platform so the experience is fully branded for your learners. Sharing and managing your training is straightforward, and you can integrate Coursebox with the learning management system you already use, so switching systems is optional rather than required. Training companies in particular carry an enormous administrative weight, and many of them are educational institutes doing genuinely valuable work in the world, held back only by how much their teams can physically get through. Coursebox brings a new set of hands to the table.

Customers describe the same shift. Candice, a mental health care professional, told us:

It helps me quickly construct courses that previously took me months and even years to build.

What is the mission behind Coursebox?

Our mission is transformative learning for everyone, everywhere. We empower organisations to produce engaging, high-quality training efficiently, and we empower learners to have a productive, enjoyable experience. That promise works in any language, which makes it genuinely accessible around the world.

We believe the long-term impact is significant. When learning becomes easier, people become more productive, and humanity moves forward faster. For a long time, learning has been held back because it was rarely enjoyable and almost never made for the individual. High-quality learning has been hard to scale and hard to maintain, so the average quality of training has stayed low. AI changes the underlying process. It gives the world a way to learn more, learn faster, and learn better. Education is one of the biggest factors in lifting people out of poverty, and we believe a tool that makes great training universal can make a real, lasting difference there.

The world doesn't need more content. It needs better learning experiences.

Why build Coursebox now?

The technology finally caught up. The idea of using AI to automate instructional design felt close to impossible a few years ago. When ChatGPT arrived, it became realistic overnight, and we pivoted straight back to it. Every advance in AI since then has widened the opportunity to create more value for anyone who delivers training.

Travis, one of our co-founders, had carried that idea for years. As the technology keeps advancing, the window keeps opening further. We believe educating people is one of the most important things in the world, and it should be far easier and far more enjoyable than it has ever been. We are determined to make that real.

What makes Coursebox different?

Coursebox is an all-in-one ecosystem that powers everything to do with training, which makes it both flexible and fast. It creates highly engaging, interactive courses in a fraction of the usual time, with a remarkable variety of components, and it integrates easily with the systems you already use.

You can have an AI tutor trained on the entire course talk back and forth with the learner. You can move the whole course into voice mode and complete quizzes by speaking. You can create training videos with avatars, or turn slides into narrated video. Quality sits at the centre of all of it. Our AI-generated courses score highly on a rating system we monitor continuously. We benchmark our output, run our own testing, and put the courses in front of real users, and we improve the engine constantly on the back of what we learn. Darren Lewis at the Institute of Economics and Peace summed up the response we hear most:

I have been pitched hundreds of LMSs and Coursebox is by far the best I have ever seen. Plus, it is way more affordable.

What are Coursebox's operating values?

4 values guide every product and team decision: move fast, change the world, think globally, and learn and grow. They help us build for the long term while moving quickly, and they keep our ambition and our global reach at the centre of the work.

Moving fast keeps us at the front of the field as an AI company. Changing the world begins with being genuinely ambitious, because transforming learning for anyone, anywhere is a large goal. Thinking globally matters because most of the world does not speak English as a first language, so from the very beginning we treated language and international availability as essential, and 40% of courses are now created in languages other than English. Our website is also multilingual and is served in 11 languages. Learning and growing runs through everything, because we are an education company at heart, and we share techniques with each other constantly and push ourselves to operate at a high standard year after year.

What could Coursebox become?

We see Coursebox as a foundational platform for the next wave of educational technology. The future we are building toward includes personalised AI learning paths, interactive simulations and practice, AI tutors available the moment a question comes up, multilingual course generation, and training powered by real-time feedback. We would love to see Coursebox become the standard way to build and manage training with agentic AI.

The Coursebox story

coursebox early days

Coursebox began with a co-founder match. I listed a profile on Y Combinator's co-founder matching platform because I wanted to build something with the potential for global impact, and that is how I met Travis Clapp, who had spent more than 10 years in instructional design and education. Travis had carried an idea for years: use AI to automate instructional design. When he first described it, my honest reaction was that it did not sound like a good idea at all, because the AI marketing tools I had tried at the time never seemed useful. Then ChatGPT arrived, and everything changed. We had been struggling to get any traction with a simple course creator, and we pivoted hard toward AI course generation. Signups started arriving every day from organic search, and sales followed.

For a while we both worked on it part-time. I put in less time at first because I had a full-time job to pay my bills, so I worked on Coursebox in the evenings and on weekends. When the sales started coming in, I decided this could become something long-term, and that the moment had come to throw myself at it completely, so I left my full-time job. That is a hard position for any founder, juggling the work while paying your own way. I was fortunate to have saved enough to last a few months, and I picked up some part-time freelancing to bridge the gap while we were not yet able to pay ourselves a salary.

About a year in, we joined Plus 8, a well-regarded accelerator in Perth, and the seed investment that came with it let us hire important people, including our founding CTO Toni, and level up the product. We kept growing and kept seeing customers from all over the world, and around a year ago we closed a seed round with a local venture fund, Purpose Ventures, which let us expand the team further. Today we are a team of 11+ people, building on years of learning-management history already in our codebase, which is exactly why Coursebox works as both an authoring tool and an LMS. It still feels like we have only just started.

A note to our customers, creators and partners

We are committed to building a product that makes training easy and streamlined, and makes the learning experience itself feel engaging and alive. Our customers, the learning designers and training companies who educate the world, deserve an easier way to do that work. We are here to support them, and we are determined to help them make it happen.

Why did Coursebox build an AI training platform?

Because traditional course creation is slow, expensive, and admin-heavy, which keeps quality low. Coursebox uses agentic AI to let anyone produce engaging, personalised training in minutes, so educators spend their time teaching rather than on administration.

How long does it take to create a course with Coursebox?

You can generate a working draft in minutes, compared with the weeks or months a traditional course takes. One customer described building a 6-module course in under 4 hours, and you can refine the draft by chatting with the AI.

Can Coursebox deliver courses in other languages?

Yes. Coursebox serves learners in 180 countries, and 40% of courses are created in languages other than English, including AI voice recordings, so training can be delivered to a high standard in a learner's first language.

Does Coursebox replace my existing LMS?

Only if you want it to. You can run everything through Coursebox as your LMS, or integrate through APIs and import courses into the learning management system you already use.
