With 7,200+ people across 10 countries and a commitment to lifetime employability, Secure Meters needed a way to turn specialist knowledge into structured, on-demand training without pulling its engineers off their real work.

We want to give our people lifetime employability, not just jobs. Coursebox gave us a way to deliver that promise at scale.

Challenge

Specialist knowledge was locked in experts' calendars, and new joiners couldn't wait

Shafik Ahmad runs global learning at Secure Meters, a multinational built on electricity metering. The company's products are installed in over 70 countries. Its people span India, the UK, Australia, Switzerland, and Sweden. And every new joiner needs the same layered foundation covering electricity fundamentals, metering parameters and product knowledge. All of this before they can contribute meaningfully to what Secure builds.

For many decades, that foundation was delivered in classrooms. The problem was geography and scheduling. “We arranged many classroom sessions,” Shafik says, “but some are busy in meetings, or some are traveling, and they are not able to always attend.”

The people running those sessions weren't trainers. They were the engineers who understood electricity metering well enough to teach it. Every missed session meant a repeated session. So this was hours pulled from product work for the same foundational content, delivered again and again across time zones. And every knowledge gap was a gap in the promise Secure had made since 1987: that employment here means lifelong development, not just a mere job.

The solution couldn't require a PhD in instructional design. It had to work for subject matter experts who are brilliant at metering, not content management. And it had to scale without adding permanent headcount to L&D.

We always had the challenge of getting people trained. Some are traveling, some are in meetings so they couldn't always attend classroom sessions.

Solution

Turn every expert into a course author

Secure Meters chose Coursebox AI as their LMS and set about converting internal expertise into a self-paced course library. Their approach was simple: rather than contracting external content creators, they trained their own subject matter experts directly on the platform.

Each expert was brought in, shown how to build a course inside Coursebox, given a brief and sent away to create. Shafik reviewed everything before it went live. “Once I'm happy with the quality, then we publish the courses.”

The curriculum was designed from the ground up with sequence in mind:

  • Electricity fundamentals — definitions, applications, and context across different environments
  • Metering fundamentals — the specific parameters Secure works with, and why each one matters
  • Product and solutions knowledge — building on that foundation with Secure’s own technologies
  • Soft skills, tools, and organisational processes — rounding out the full onboarding experience

“Once they know those parameters and the significance of those parameters, they will correlate and build on higher knowledge,” Shafik explains. This sequence wasn’t arbitrary and rather mirrored how a new engineer actually needed to think.

Secure Meters subject-matter experts in a training session

With 40 courses published, every new joiner now has a structured path to follow in their first month on their own schedule, without relying on scheduled classes.

We trained our own subject matter experts on Coursebox. Once they understood the platform, they built the courses themselves. I reviewed everything before we published.

Results

500+ employees trained, onboarding locked in and the library keeps growing

The change from classroom-only has had a positive impact at Secure. Employees across four continents now move through the same structured curriculum on their own schedule. No repeated sessions or knowledge gaps created by a missed classroom block.

  • 40 courses published across electricity fundamentals, metering, product knowledge, soft skills and tools
  • 500+ employees have completed at least one course
  • New joiners complete foundational onboarding within their first month on the job
  • Internal experts freed from repeating the same classroom sessions across time zones

“People are enjoying learning through Coursebox,” Shafik says. That matters at a company where the commitment to learning is built into the culture. When people engage with the content, they build on it.

People are enjoying learning through Coursebox. What we want is for the basic knowledge to be imparted so that they can build on higher knowledge — and now they can.

What's Next

From onboarding to lifelong development

The 40-course library is a strong foundation for something even more impactful. Secure Meters has functional knowledge courses in development that extend training well beyond the first month, giving employees a resource to return to as their roles grow and the technology evolves.

Classroom sessions continue for advanced and collaborative topics, running alongside self-paced content rather than being replaced by it. The team's goal is a curriculum that grows with the company: one that turns Secure Meters' 35+ years of technical expertise into a living, searchable knowledge base and which keeps the promise of lifetime employability as the company expands.
